Stain Removal by Stain Type, Not Folk Recipes
Most stain advice that circulates informally is organised by what caused the stain — a "wine stain hack," a "grass stain trick" — rather than by the chemistry that actually determines how to treat it. Protein stains: cold, no exceptions
Blood, sweat, egg, and dairy are protein-based, and the calculator returns a cold rinse for this category on every fabric it's asked about — cotton-linen and wool-silk-delicate both come back identical: cold water, and the same pretreatment of flushing the back of the fabric before working in a little dish soap or an enzyme detergent. Fabric doesn't change the answer here because protein's own chemistry is already at the coldest tier the tool offers; there's no fabric cap that could push the recommendation any lower than it already sits. The reason cold is non-negotiable is that warm or hot water coagulates the protein onto the fibre, in miniature the same reaction that turns egg white from clear to opaque and solid under heat — once that's happened, it's frequently permanent regardless of what's tried afterward.
Tannin stains: cold, and no soap yet either
Wine, coffee, tea, and fruit juice fall into the tannin category, and the calculator again returns cold water regardless of fabric — cotton-linen and synthetic both come back cold, with an identical pretreatment note. What's different about tannin's own pretreatment text is the explicit warning that soap shouldn't touch a fresh tannin stain either, only cold water at first: soap can help set a very fresh tannin mark rather than lift it, which is the opposite of what most folk advice assumes about "getting stuck in with soap right away."
Oil-based stains: the one category allowed to be warm — except on delicate fabric
Cooking oil, makeup, and motor grease are the one stain category the tool treats warm water as genuinely helpful for, since oil dissolves and lifts more readily with some warmth than cold water alone provides. Ask about oil-based stains on cotton-linen or denim and the guide returns warm water with a cornstarch-or-talc pretreatment to draw the oil out before working in dish soap. But ask about the identical oil-based stain on wool-silk-delicate, and the recommendation drops to cold — the fabric's own cap overrides the stain's usual warm allowance, because delicate protein fibre's heat sensitivity outweighs the modest extra cleaning benefit warm water would offer against the oil. This is a genuinely useful, non-obvious result: the same stain gets different first-move advice purely based on what it landed on, which a generic "oil stains: use warm water" rule of thumb would miss entirely.
Dye and ink: solvent, not water, does the lifting
Pen, marker, and dye transfer respond to a completely different approach: rubbing alcohol blotted — never rubbed — from the back of the fabric, moving the stain away from the weave rather than driving it through. The calculator returns cold water as the rinse temperature regardless of fabric here too, with denim and wool-silk-delicate both landing on an identical recommendation, because the water rinse is a secondary step to the solvent doing the actual work, not the primary lifting mechanism the way it is for the other categories.
Wax and chewing gum: nothing liquid until it's hard
This category breaks the "rinse first" pattern that governs everything else on this list. Wax and gum need to be hardened — ice or a freezer bag pressed against the spot — and scraped off with something dull before any liquid treatment touches them at all, because a liquid or warm treatment applied to still-soft wax or gum spreads it further into the fibres rather than lifting it. Once it's been scraped away as thoroughly as possible, the calculator still recommends a cold rinse for whatever residue remains, consistent with every other heat-sensitive category above.
Mud and dried dirt: the one category where heat genuinely isn't the concern
Mud is the single stain category the tool flags differently from the other five: it's the only one where "avoid heat until removed" doesn't apply. The recommended first move is also the most counterintuitive one on this list — do nothing while it's wet, let it dry completely, and brush off as much loose soil as possible before any water touches it, because wet dirt smears into the weave rather than lifting out of it. Once the loose soil is brushed away, a normal wash handles what's left with no special temperature restriction, which is a genuinely different profile from every protein, tannin, oil, and dye stain covered above.
Why "check before it goes near a hot dryer" is the step folk recipes skip
Every category above, other than mud, carries a flag in the tool's own logic marking heat as something to actively avoid until the stain is confirmed gone, and the practical instruction that comes with it — inspect the still-damp fabric in good light before it ever reaches a dryer — is exactly the step a quick folk recipe tends to skip. A hot dryer can finish setting a stain a wash cycle only partially removed, turning a faint, still-treatable mark into a permanent one in a single ten-minute cycle. Checking while the item is still wet costs nothing and takes a few seconds, and it's the difference between catching a stain that needs a second treatment and discovering, weeks later, that it was baked in the whole time.
Testing on a hidden seam first, every time
Every recommendation in the guide is general chemical guidance for a fabric category, not a lab-tested certainty for your specific garment's exact dye, finish, or trim. Before applying rubbing alcohol to a dyed synthetic, dish soap to a delicate hand-wash item, or any pretreatment to a garment you're not fully sure about, testing on an inside seam or hem — a spot that won't show if something goes wrong — costs thirty seconds and catches the rare case where a specific dye or finish reacts differently than the fabric category generally would. This matters most for anything already flagged as delicate, since it's also the category with the least room for a treatment to go wrong before real damage is done.
Why denim gets its own category instead of being folded into cotton
Denim is structurally a cotton weave, but the stain guide treats it as its own fabric group rather than folding it into cotton-linen, and the dye/ink example above shows why that distinction earns its keep: denim's heavy, usually dark indigo dye behaves differently under a solvent-based ink treatment than a plain white cotton shirt does, and its thicker weave holds a stain deeper before it reaches the surface. In practice this mostly shows up as denim tolerating a slightly more assertive treatment before the fabric itself is at risk, though the biggest practical factor is still the dye — a solvent test on a hidden seam matters more on dark, dyed denim than on white cotton precisely because dye bleeding is a real risk on denim that a plain white shirt doesn't share.
Never combine chlorine bleach with ammonia or an acid
This is the single most important safety note in this article, and it applies regardless of which stain category you're treating. Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia-based cleaners — this releases toxic chloramine gas — and never mix chlorine bleach with vinegar or any other acid-based product — this releases chlorine gas. Both reactions happen at completely ordinary household concentrations, not just with industrial-strength products, and both are genuinely dangerous in the small, often poorly ventilated space of a laundry room or bathroom. This matters most exactly where a stubborn, set-in stain tempts a "let's combine two strong things" approach: a bleach-based stain treatment followed immediately by a second, different cleaning product on the same spot, or a whites-only bleach wash "topped up" with an ammonia-based glass or multi-surface cleaner kept in the same cupboard. If a stain genuinely needs chlorine bleach and the fabric tolerates it, treat that as one complete, well-ventilated, single-product step, rinsed and finished before anything else touches the same spot. If you ever smell a strong chemical odour after combining products, leave the room, ventilate it, and don't return until it's cleared — seek medical advice if anyone is coughing, short of breath, or has burning or watering eyes.
Why identifying the category matters more than finding "the right product"
The pattern across all six categories above is that fabric and product matter less than correctly identifying which of the six chemical categories a stain actually belongs to. A folk recipe organised by cause — "here's what to do about wine" — tends to bundle temperature, product, and technique into one fixed instruction that doesn't adapt to what fabric it landed on, whereas the categories above show that the same stain type genuinely needs different handling on different fabric, and different stain types on the identical fabric need different handling from each other.
