The wash's spin speed sets the starting line — a higher spin means less water to remove in the first place — and the drying method and the fabric's own thickness decide how quickly the rest evaporates.
Overestimating a synthetic load's drying time wastes energy and can shrink or damage heat-sensitive fibers held in a hot dryer too long; underestimating a bulky, low-spin load leaves it damp and musty. This estimator is here to close that gap before you set the timer.

Why does spin speed matter for drying time, not just washing?
A washing machine's spin cycle flings out a large share of the water a load is holding before drying even starts — the higher the spin speed, the less water is left to evaporate. Two identical loads can have very different drying times purely because one was spun at 800rpm and the other at 1400rpm; the low-spin load may be carrying close to half again as much residual water into the dryer or onto the line.
Why do towels and denim take so much longer than a t-shirt?
Thickness and weave density, not just fabric type, decide how much water a textile can hold and how easily air can move through it to carry that moisture away. A dense terry towel or a heavy denim weave traps far more water per kilogram than a lightweight cotton t-shirt, and that trapped water sits deeper in the fibers, out of reach of surface airflow — which is why the same 'cotton' setting dries a shirt in a fraction of the time it takes a bath towel.
Is air-drying really that much slower than a tumble dryer?
Usually, yes, often by a factor of three to six depending on humidity and airflow. A tumble dryer combines heat, constant air movement, and tumbling that keeps exposing fresh, damp fabric to that airflow — conditions a still room or a calm day outdoors can't fully replicate. A breezy, sunny day outdoors closes much of that gap, while a humid or still indoor room is the slowest realistic option on this list.
