Predicting Fabric Shrinkage by Fibre (and Why It Happens)
Shrinkage isn't a single fixed percentage that applies to "fabric" in general — it depends heavily on fibre, on whether the fabric was pre-shrunk during manufacturing, and on how much heat the drying method applies on top of the fibre's own baseline. The same t-shirt, pre-shrunk versus not
Take a 71cm-long cotton t-shirt — a completely ordinary garment length — and dry it on medium tumble heat. If it's pre-shrunk (sanforized) cotton, the calculator predicts 3.9% shrinkage, finishing at 68.2cm. If the identical fabric hadn't been pre-shrunk, the same wash and dry predicts 7.8% shrinkage — exactly double — finishing at 65.5cm, nearly 3cm shorter than the pre-shrunk version from the same starting length and the same drying method. That gap has nothing to do with how you washed or dried it; it comes entirely from a mechanical finishing step (or its absence) applied at the textile mill, months before the shirt was ever sold. Reading a garment's tag for "pre-shrunk" or "sanforized" tells you more about how much it'll shrink than anything you do at home.
Why cellulose fibres shrink at all
Cotton, linen, and rayon fibres are stretched slightly during spinning and weaving, and that tension gets locked into the fabric's structure until heat and moisture give the fibres enough energy to relax back toward their natural, unstretched state — which is a shorter, more tightly packed structure than the stretched fabric you bought. Pre-shrinking anticipates this by deliberately relaxing the fabric at the mill, under controlled conditions, before it's cut and sewn, so most of that relaxation has already happened by the time you own the garment. A non-pre-shrunk fabric still has that relaxation ahead of it, and your first hot wash and dry is what triggers it — which is exactly why the very first wash of an unwashed garment typically accounts for most of its lifetime shrinkage, with each wash after that moving the needle far less.
Wool: drying method matters more than the wash itself
A 60cm-long wool sweater air-dried predicts 5% shrinkage, finishing at 57cm. Tumble dried on high heat instead, the same sweater predicts 8% shrinkage, finishing at 55.2cm — nearly 2cm shorter purely from the drying method, with nothing about the wash itself changed. This tracks with the felting mechanism covered in our piece on cold wash versus hot wash: heat drives wool's microscopic fibre scales to hook together and pull tighter, and a hot tumble dryer applies sustained heat for far longer than even a hot wash cycle does. For any wool item, the safest predictable outcome is air-drying, not because the wash itself is risk-free, but because the dryer is usually where the larger share of shrinkage actually happens.
Raw denim: the shrink-to-fit legend, in real numbers
Raw (unwashed, untreated) denim has a reputation among enthusiasts for shrinking dramatically on its first wash, and the calculator's numbers back that reputation up. An 81cm inseam — a fairly standard length — tumble dried on high heat predicts 16% shrinkage, finishing at 68cm: nearly 13cm gone, more than an entire size's worth of length, from one wash-and-dry cycle. Air-dried instead, the same jeans predict 10% shrinkage, finishing at 72.9cm — still substantial, but noticeably less than the tumble-dried outcome. This is exactly why raw-denim buying guides commonly recommend sizing up and air-drying the first wash deliberately, planning for the shrink rather than being surprised by it. It's worth noting this figure applies specifically to raw, unwashed denim; pre-washed denim (the overwhelming majority sold in ordinary stores) has already been through this relaxation at the mill or by the manufacturer, similar in spirit to pre-shrunk cotton, and won't repeat anything close to this drop at home.
Rayon and viscose shrink like a natural fibre, despite feeling synthetic-smooth
Rayon and viscose are manufactured fibres, but they're made from regenerated plant cellulose rather than petrochemicals, and the calculator's numbers reflect that: a 110cm dress, even air-dried — the gentlest drying method the calculator offers — still predicts 8% shrinkage, finishing at 101.2cm. That's a meaningfully bigger drop than cotton gets from the same gentle drying method, and it catches people off guard specifically because rayon's smooth, silk-like hand feels closer to a synthetic than to cotton. It's worth noting that rayon and viscose aren't covered by the wash-temperature calculator's fibre list at all, precisely because their washing needs vary so much by specific weave and finish — many rayon garments call for hand-washing or dry cleaning specifically because the fibre loses a meaningful amount of strength when wet, on top of the shrinkage shown here. When in doubt on a rayon or viscose garment, treat the shrinkage number above as a floor, not a ceiling, and default to the gentlest handling the item's own label allows.
Why you can't fully undo a shrunk garment
Once cotton, linen, wool, or rayon fibres have relaxed into their shorter resting state, there's no wash or dry setting that stretches them back out to the original measurement, because nothing about a normal laundry cycle re-introduces the tension that manufacturing originally held them under. Some knit garments — a stretchy cotton or wool-blend sweater, specifically — can be gently reshaped and eased back toward close to their original dimensions while still damp, laid flat and coaxed with your hands rather than pulled hard, but this recovers only some of the lost length and works far better on knits than on tightly woven fabric like a shirt or jeans, which have essentially no give to ease back into. Treat any "unshrinking" method as a partial, best-effort fix for a knit, not a reliable reversal, and treat prevention — the right temperature and drying method from the first wash — as the only genuinely dependable strategy.
Why the second and third washes don't keep shrinking a garment further
It's a common and reasonable worry that a garment might keep shrinking a little more with every single wash indefinitely, but that's not how the underlying mechanism works. The relaxation described above draws on tension that was locked into the fibre once, during manufacturing, and once that tension has released — typically substantially complete after the first proper hot wash and dry — there's very little left for a second or third wash to relax further. This is exactly why a pre-shrunk garment shrinks so much less than an unwashed one to begin with: pre-shrinking is simply that same first-wash relaxation, done deliberately at the mill instead of by accident in your machine. Practically, this means the biggest single shrinkage risk on any new, non-pre-shrunk garment is that very first wash and dry — get the temperature and drying method right that one time, and the risk drops sharply for every wash after it.
A quick fibre cheat-sheet from the numbers above
Lined up together, the examples above sort fibres into a rough hierarchy worth remembering even without rerunning the calculator every time: raw denim shrinks the most dramatically of anything covered here, rayon and viscose shrink more than their smooth feel suggests and even more than plain cotton at the same drying method, non-pre-shrunk cotton shrinks roughly double what the pre-shrunk version of the identical fabric does, wool's shrinkage is driven more by drying method than by the wash itself, and polyester barely moves regardless of how it's dried. None of these are numbers to memorise precisely, but knowing which end of that hierarchy a new garment's fibre sits on is usually enough to decide whether air-drying the first wash is a nice-to-have or a genuine size-saving precaution.
Working backward: buying or cutting fabric to land on a size
Everything above predicts a finished size from a known starting measurement, but the calculator also runs in reverse. Say you want a linen curtain panel to finish at exactly 150cm after its first wash and a medium-heat tumble dry: the calculator works out that linen shrinks 5.2% under those conditions, and tells you to buy or cut 158.2cm to land on that 150cm target once shrinkage has happened. That reverse calculation is the more useful direction for anyone sewing, hemming before a first wash, or buying curtains and linens sized to a specific window or bed — buying to the "finished" measurement you actually want and then discovering it's 8cm short after the first wash is a completely avoidable mistake once you know which direction the fabric moves and by how much.
Polyester barely moves at all
For contrast, run 100cm of polyester through the highest-heat tumble setting the calculator offers, and it predicts just 1.6% shrinkage — 98.4cm, a difference you'd struggle to notice without a tape measure. Polyester and nylon are petrochemical fibres rather than cellulose, manufactured through a process that doesn't leave the same kind of relaxable tension in the fibre structure, so there's very little "spring back" left for heat to trigger regardless of drying method. This is why synthetic blends are often marketed as holding their size reliably wash after wash: it's a genuine, measurable property of the fibre, not just marketing language, and it's exactly why a garment blended with even a modest percentage of polyester or nylon typically shrinks noticeably less than the same design in 100% cotton or rayon.
