Why Your Towels Are Going Stiff (and How to Fix It)
A towel that used to feel soft and soak up water in one pass, but now feels crunchy and seems to just push water around, hasn't necessarily worn out. In most homes the real cause is a build-up problem — residue accumulating in the loops of the terry weave over months of washing — and it responds to a specific fix rather than a replacement purchase.
What's actually coating the fibres
Terry towelling works by capillary action: the fabric is woven into thousands of small loops that pull water in between the fibres. Anything that coats those loops reduces how much surface area is available to do that job. Three things build up over repeated washes: detergent that wasn't fully rinsed out, fabric softener, and mineral deposits from hard water. All three leave a film, and the film both stiffens the fabric and blocks the tiny gaps the loops rely on to absorb water.
Fabric softener is the biggest single culprit
Fabric softener works by coating fibres in a waxy, lubricating layer that makes fabric feel smoother against skin — which is exactly the wrong property for a towel, whose entire job is absorbing water rather than repelling it. Every softener dose adds another thin waxy layer, and over dozens of washes those layers compound into a coating that visibly reduces absorbency, even though the towel looks and feels fine folded in a cupboard. Hard water compounds the problem
In hard-water areas, dissolved calcium and magnesium react with soap and detergent residue to form a slightly sticky mineral deposit that clings to fabric in the same way it clings to a kettle or a showerhead. This buildup is harder to rinse away than plain detergent residue, and it's a major reason the same towel-stiffness problem is often much worse in some homes than others, purely down to local water hardness rather than anything done differently in the wash.
The reset wash
The fix is a stripping wash: run the towels through a hot wash cycle with no detergent and about a cup of white vinegar instead, which helps dissolve mineral buildup and rinses cleaner than soap residue does on its own. Follow it with a second hot wash using a normal, correctly dosed amount of detergent and nothing else — no softener, no dryer sheets. Many towels visibly regain softness and absorbency after just this one reset, because the two-wash cycle actually strips the accumulated coating rather than adding another layer over it.
Why towels build up residue faster than clothing
Terry towelling has far more surface area per kilogram than a flat-weave shirt or sheet, because the loops that make it absorbent also multiply the number of fibre surfaces available for residue to cling to. A towel is also, by its nature, washed less often relative to how much it's used — the same hand towel might get used dozens of times between washes, while a shirt is typically washed after one wear — so whatever residue does accumulate has more washes to build up across before it's ever fully addressed. That combination is exactly why towels tend to show this problem well before bedsheets or clothing in the same wash rotation, and why they're the first thing worth checking if a whole load starts to feel oddly stiff.
Preventing it from coming back

The stripping wash: what never to add to it
Because the reset wash calls for white vinegar — an acid — it's worth being explicit about what shouldn't go anywhere near that load. Never add chlorine bleach to a vinegar wash, and never run a vinegar stripping wash in a machine where a chlorine bleach dispenser or a leftover bleach dose from an earlier cycle is still present: combining an acid with chlorine bleach releases chlorine gas, and this can happen at completely ordinary laundry concentrations, not just with concentrated products. If your towels are white enough that you're tempted to add a splash of bleach “while you're at it,” run that as a fully separate cycle on a different day, with no vinegar involved at all, and make sure the drum has been rinsed clean of vinegar residue first. The two treatments solve different problems — vinegar for mineral and detergent buildup, bleach for staining or disinfecting whites — and there is no version of combining them into one stronger step that's worth the risk.
Testing your water hardness without a lab kit
You don't need to send a sample away to get a useful read on whether hard water is a factor in your home. A simple lather test tells you most of what you need: fill a clear bottle partway with tap water, add a small amount of plain liquid soap (not detergent, which is formulated to work around hard water to some degree), and shake it. Soft water produces a tall, long-lasting foam; hard water produces little foam and instead often a slightly cloudy, curdled-looking water, because the calcium and magnesium are reacting with the soap instead of it forming lather. Front-loading machines add a residue problem of their own
Front-loading washers are generally more water- and energy-efficient than top-loaders, but their sealed rubber door gasket creates a damp, dark environment that residue-laden water doesn't fully drain from between cycles. Detergent and softener film that would simply rinse away and evaporate in an open-top machine can sit in that gasket fold and around the door seal, and towels — which shed more lint and carry more residue-trapping surface area than flat items — are often the first place a musty smell or a fresh stiffness shows up even right after a wash that used a correctly measured dose. Wiping the gasket fold dry after a wash and leaving the door ajar between loads (rather than sealing in the moisture) does more to prevent this than any change to detergent or softener amount, because the source isn't the fabric at that point, it's the machine itself redepositing residue onto whatever's washed next.
A gentler alternative for towels you don't want to strip too often
Vinegar is effective but is still an acid, and using it on every single wash isn't necessary or particularly kind to elastic trims or embroidered borders some towels have. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), added directly to the drum or the detergent dispenser at roughly half a cup for a full load, is a milder alternative that helps soften water somewhat and lifts some odour without the acidity of vinegar, making it a reasonable choice for the washes in between full stripping resets rather than a replacement for them. It won't cut through a heavy mineral or softener build-up as effectively as a dedicated vinegar strip, but as a low-key maintenance step every few regular washes, it helps slow how quickly the coating problem described above comes back.
A softener alternative that doesn't sacrifice absorbency
Giving up fabric softener on towels can feel like giving up the softness it provides, but wool dryer balls address the same wrinkle-and-static problem softener does through a completely different, residue-free mechanism: a few solid wool balls tumbling with the load physically separate items so air and heat circulate more evenly, which reduces both static cling and the tangled, twisted-up bunching that makes a towel dry stiff in patches. Because nothing is deposited onto the fabric, there's no waxy coating to build up over dozens of washes, and reused for hundreds of loads, they don't need repurchasing every few months the way a box of dryer sheets does.
How often towels actually need washing
Washing a towel after every single use isn't necessary for hygiene and actively accelerates the residue problem this article is about — more washes means more exposure to whatever's in your water and whatever dose of detergent gets used, and a towel that's just drying an already-clean body doesn't accumulate soil the way workwear or bedding does. A bath towel used by one person and properly hung to dry fully between uses is commonly fine for three to four uses before washing; a towel that stays damp and bunched between uses, or is shared by several people, needs washing sooner because it doesn't get the chance to dry out and is exposed to more skin oil and moisture overall.
